  1. 1821-1913. US abolitionist. Born a slave in
  2. Maryland, she escaped to Philadelphia (where
  3. slavery was outlawed) 1849. She set up the
  4. Underground Railroad, a secret network of
  5. sympathizers, to help slaves escape to the
  6. North and Canada. During the American Civil
  7. War she served as a spy for the Union army.
  8. She spoke against slavery and for women's
  9. rights, and founded schools for emancipated
  10. slaves after the Civil War.
